Carla and Kayla's Story

"To live, to love and to learn" is the perfect motto for Mom's House, because it it exactly what Mom's House enables me as well as other single parents to do. To describe Mom's House simply as a daycare center would be quite an understatement. Mom's House is so much more than that.

Two years ago, I was unsure about what I was going to do with my life in the future and how I was going to build a foundation for a successful future for my daughter and me. I knew that eventually I would have to get a quality education, so that I could have a successful career to provide for and set a good example for my daughter. As soon as I heard there were openings available at Mom's House, I applied for a spot in the program. I knew that Mom's House would provide a wonderful opportunity for me to complete my education, to give my daughter a head start on her education and to contribute to the community at the same time. I have always been interested in volunteering my time for a good cause, and realized that I needed to start on my education, but was unable to do so due to lack of time, childcare and other resources. I was so excited when I heard that I was accepted into the program for the fall semester 2000.

It is now the spring of 2002 and sadly, it is Kayla and my last semester at Mom's House. Mom's House has made a dramatic difference in both my life and Kayla's life. Mom's House has given me the opportunity to build a stable foundation for the wonderful quality of life I am building for Kayla and me. Right now, my long term goal is to become a secondary education history and social studies teacher and Mom's House has had a large part in my success thus far. Receiving a quality education is of the utmost importance and if it was not for Mom's House, I might not have had an opportunity to do this.

Mom's House has not only given me the opportunity to excel academically, but has also allowed me to fulfill my desire to be active in the community, participate in volunteer work and in fundraising. Mom's House is so special and unique, because in exchange for the program, parents who are enrolled complete three hours of service time every week at Mom's House and participate in fundraising. The service time consists of the many different duties necessary to keep the house running and in excellent condition. I feel very blessed that Kayla and I have been given the chance to participate in such a rewarding program. Mom's House has had a remarkable influence on Kayla's personal and intellectual development as well as my own.

Next fall, Kayla will be going off to kindergarten and although that is a very exciting milestone, we will both miss coming to Mom's House every day. Thanks to everyone at Mom's House and everyone who has contributed to Mom's House, the past two years have been the most successful and fulfilling of our lives.
