The History of Mom's House
Mom's House of Endicott, NY Inc. is a non-profit, New York State licensed day care center for single parents enrolled in an educational program. We provide free day care for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers while their parents are in school. We provide the single parent with workshops in child development, nutrition, CPR, educational options, and many other subject areas. Mom's House is a place where single parents and their children receive support, practical help, encouragement and love.

Mom's House of Endicott, NY Inc. is chartered by the parent corporation, Mom's House, Inc. which was founded in 1983 in Johnstown, PA. Founder, Peg Luksik, saw a need for a support system to help single parents complete their education and become self-supporting for themselves and their children.

Today, there are eight Mom's House nationally chartered centers:
Johnstown, PA
Greensburg, PA
Lancaster, PA
Phoenixville, PA
Toledo, OH,
Wilmington and Dover, DE;
Johnson City, NY.

Each house is separately incorporated and governed by a volunteer board of directors, which is responsible for long-range planning and program evaluations. Each house is responsible for raising the necessary funds for maintaining annual operations.

Mom's House in Endicott opened on February 29, 1988 with eight children and six parents. Our new building in Johnson City has a capacity for forty children and forty parents.

Hours are Monday through Friday 7:30AM to 3:30PM during the school year. Our parents have ranged in age from fourteen to forty years old. They have been enrolled in educational programs at:

Our parents and children come from the Broome, Tioga and Chenango County areas.

Staffing consists of an executive director, a program director, office manager, administrative assistant, two lead teachers, two group supervisors, two child-care aides and approximately thirty volunteers. Our staff child ratio is: one staff/two infants, one staff/five toddlers, one staff/seven preschoolers.

The parents enrolled at Mom's House do not pay a monetary fee for their child's day care. In exchange for the free day care, the parent agrees by written contract to attend school regularly, maintain passing grades, give three hours of service to the center each week and complete five hours of fundraising time per semester. Tutoring is available when needed. The parents receive support and encouragement to succeed in this difficult role of parent and student.

Each Mom's House is responsible for raising the necessary funds to operate the day care center on an annual basis. Five major fundraisers are held each year: Pizza Sale, Solution of Hope Banquet, Breakfast with Santa, Rocker-thon, and Golf Tournament. Grant proposals are submitted to local foundations and trusts. Individuals and organizations pledge on a monthly basis. The community support through monetary and material donations accounts for approximately eighty-five percent of the overall funding.

Mom's House offers solutions of hope to those faced with difficult choices. February 28, 2008 marked the twentieth anniversary of our opening. As of June 2008, one hundred and seventy-two parents have graduated from their respective educational programs. Our graduates have either gone on to higher education or have secured employment in their chosen fields. Mom's House stands as a living monument to the power of loving action in creating new lives for two generations of young people.
